Title

Look out for both these signs as you walk this route. The 'Leaping Salmon' is the official logo of the Wye Valley Walk and can be seen on signposts, noticeboards and ther way-markers. The lettered signpost is a bit more obvious. The route is pretty well signposted, but not perfect; so you need to keep alert and check the map.

"Walk the Wye" is a 26 page illustrated WALK Scene guide to the Wye Valley Walk that downloads as a pdf file. Get this guide for just £3 by clicking the PayPal button below (as you complete the payment follow the redirect to the download site).

Highlights of this walk

  • One of England & Wales' prettiest rivers
  • Historic riverside towns
  • Unspoiled woodland scenery
  • Magnificent viewpoints
  • SSI's (sites of Special Scientific Interest)
The Wye Valley Walk is one of Britain's rightly-valued long-distance footpaths. It runs close to the Welsh-English border, sometimes in one country, sometimes in the other. For simplicity, we have placed all sections in our "Wales" directory (even sections that are entirely within England). The complete official route begins at Ryader and takes about 10 days. This WALK Scene version is designed to be walked in a single week's holiday (including both weekends). to achieve that, we begin at the fascinating town of Hay-on-Wye.
Sections featured (mostly 1 day walks, with 2 sections that may optionally be taken as circular walks after dropping off your backpack)...
  1. Hay-on-Wye to Middlewood
  2. Middlewood to Sugwas Pool
  3. Sugwas Pool to Hereford
  4. Hereford to Fownhope via Nupend
    1. Fownhope circular walk via Capler Camp
  5. Capler Camp to Ross-on-Wye
  6. Ross-on-Wye to Goodrich
    1. Goodrich circular walk via Symonds Yat
  7. Symonds Yat to Redbrook Bridge
  8. Redbrook Bridge to Chepstow

To guide you through the whole walk in a week, pack the 26-page WALK Scene guide "Walk the Wye".

Safety and Difficulty

The Wye Valley Walk is not a mountain route, but it includes some stiff climbs and several sections that can be very muddy. The week-long walk should not be attempted without proper walking boots and wet weather gear. This WALK Scene route plan includes some longish sections that inexperienced walkers may find too much.

Road Directions

This is a continuous walk, so the assumption is that most days start on foot from wherever you are staying. Hay-on-Wye is located about 19 miles northwest of Hereford (grid reference 229422)

Car Parking

Because this is intended as a continuous walk we are not including parking information on the individual sections. However, both Hay-on-Wye and Chepstow have good sized central Car Parks, so it is possible to park a car at each end and walk from one to the other.
