Brecon Beacons 4 waterfalls walk

Sgwd Isaf Clwn-gwyn

Highlights of this walk

  • A large cave
  • Riverside walks
  • Four impressive waterfalls
  • The chance to walk behind a waterfall
  • Woodland walks

In an area full of stunning scenery this walk has no difficulty in competing. People travel the world to see lesser sights than this concentration of watery drama. Two rivers, the Hepste and the Mellte provide the entertainment by plunging deep and wide through delightful wooded gorges. The Mellte adds to the performance by disappearing into a large cave to emerge near a peaceful meadow before continuing its descent.

Safety and Difficulty

This 6 mile circular walk includes some steep climbs and potentially slippery sections. The most dangerous areas are fenced, but care should be taken on the rocks and alongside both rivers especially when the water is high and flowing fast.

Road Directions

FOR MAIN ROUTE

Take the A4059 between Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil. About 1 mile north of Penderyn turn onto a minor road in the direction of Ystradfellte and Gwaun Hepste. Continue past the Gwaun Hepste Car Park to the Cavers' Car Park on the right just before a bridge.

FOR ALTERNATIVE ROUTE
From the Brecon direction use A4059 towards Merthyr Tydfil. Approaching Penderyn turn right, just after the 30 mph speed limit sign. A short way along on the right see an entrance with space for a few cars.

From the South (Merthyr Tydfil) on A4059 enter Penderyn and take second turning on the left, just after the Lamb Hotel. At the end of this small residential road the footpath begins near a fenced off triangle. This is unsuitable for parking but turn right to find an entrance with space for a few cars.

Car Parking

The main route uses the Cavers Car Park near Ystradfellte, which is reasonably spacious and is provided with good toilet facilities. If the Cavers Car Park is full there is a larger Car Park at Gwaun Hepste from which access to the higher falls (Sgwd Clwn-gwyn) is clearly signposted. However, this misses the delights of the Cave.

WARNING

One of our readers has told us (May 2008) that the Gwaun Hepste Car Park is no longer warden supervised and thieves have been breaking into cars. Take all possible precautions to protect your property. Police say that the alternative CAr Park further down the road does have a warden.

Parking for Alternative Route
The alternative route has no proper parking facilities and may present problems at busy times. There is limited parking space close to an entrance alongside the road.
