Notes and points of interest
Dartmeet is a popular tourist spot at the
confluence of the East and West Dart rivers. It lies in a deep valley
that cuts through the high moor. The village is tiny but the passing
pooulation is huge (though many stay only for an hour or so). A
hump back bridge crosses the river. An older 'clapper bridge' is
partly collapsed and reaches half-way across the river.
Badgers Holt is a resturant at Dartmeet,
situated at the extreme end of the public Car Part.
Bellever Tor reaches 1440 feet (443 metres)
and is topped by a tumble of rocks that can be easily climbed. The
view from the top is attractive, taking in the East Dart valley
and several woodland areas.
Laughter Tor is smaller than its neighbour
(Bellever Tor) but still offers striking views.
Laughter Hole lies in the valley between
the heathland of Babeny and the woodland that fills the area betweeen
Laughter Tor and Belever Tor. It is a pretty spot, where a set of
stepping stones (see left) crosses the West Dart river.
Hexworthy is a tiny village, virtually devoid
of facilities, but blessed with characteristic Dartmoor cottages
in an out-of-the-way setting that can sensibly only be visited on
foot.
