Notes and points of interest
Boot
- This tiny village nestles prettily under the lower slopes of England's
highest mountain range. The old Eskdale water mill is run as a visitor
attraction.
Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway
- Built in the nineteenth century to serve local mines, this railway
declined so badly by the early twentieth century that it was forcibly
closed due to neglect of safety standards. It was revived due to
the efforts of enthusiasts and reopened as a tourist attraction
and now draws large numbers of enthusiastic children and adults.
Scafell - Don't be confused
by the same name applied to adjacent peaks. The neighbouring Scafell
Pike is England's highest at 977 metres (3206 feet). Scafell itself
is the second highest at 964 metres (3133 feet).
